Corydoras elegans
Also known as: Elegant Cory, Elegant Corydoras
Origin: Peru, Brazil (upper Amazon tributaries)
Corydoras elegans lives up to its name — it is one of the more graceful-looking cories, with a slender body profile, a bold lateral stripe, and a dark upper body that contrasts sharply against its pale flanks. It originates from the upper Amazon and its Peruvian tributaries, where it inhabits clear, shallow, often fast-flowing streams over sandy substrate.
Unlike many of its relatives that are predominantly crepuscular, C. elegans is notably active during daylight hours. It frequently rises from the substrate to swim actively in the water column, particularly when in the company of a large group. This behavioural trait makes it more visually engaging than most cories and draws comparison to the pygmy species.
Care is straightforward: the species tolerates a wide range of water conditions and is highly adaptable. A varied diet, a fine substrate, regular partial water changes, and a group of at least six will ensure a thriving colony. It is frequently available through specialist retailers and represents excellent value for aquarists seeking an active, attractive bottom-dweller.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–26°C; adaptable and tolerant of varied conditions. Tank: 60 L minimum with fine sand, moderate planting, and some open swimming space; good filtration beneficial. Feeding: Sinking pellets, micro-granules, frozen bloodworm, and Daphnia; feeds actively throughout the day. Breeding: Relatively easy; typical cory method — cool water change trigger, eggs on leaves and glass; large broods possible. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; suitable for most peaceful tropical aquaria.
