Crenicichla elegans
Also known as: Elegant Pike Cichlid, Ucayali Pike Cichlid
Origin: Rio Ucayali drainage, Peru and western Brazil
Crenicichla elegans is a beautifully proportioned medium-sized pike cichlid from the Rio Ucayali drainage in Peru and adjacent western Brazil. The species name elegans perfectly captures the fish's slim, graceful build and neatly defined patterning — a fine lateral stripe, subtle spotting on the upper flanks, and a yellow-green iridescent sheen under good lighting.
The Rio Ucayali is a clear-to-whitewater system of the western Amazon, and C. elegans in the wild inhabits shaded rocky and woody margins where current is reduced. In the aquarium, moderately soft to neutral water suits the species well, and it is more adaptable to typical tap water conditions than many blackwater Crenicichla.
Reaching 18 cm, C. elegans is a manageable species for a 180 L species tank. It feeds readily on frozen carnivore foods and accepts quality cichlid pellets. Breeding follows the cave-spawning pattern and has been achieved in captivity, making this an excellent entry-level Crenicichla for aquarists stepping into the genus for the first time.
Water: Moderately soft to neutral (pH 5.5–7.0) at 24–28°C; good filtration important. Tank: 180 L with sandy substrate, driftwood, and rock caves; moderate planting optional. Feeding: Frozen prawn, bloodworm, mussel; cichlid pellets accepted readily — a good eater. Breeding: Cave spawner; relatively straightforward; condition pair with varied live/frozen diet. Compatibility: Good entry-level Crenicichla; keep with fish too large to be eaten.
