Eleotris melanosoma
Also known as: Eleotris Melanosoma Sleeper, Dark Sleeper, Black-bodied Sleeper Goby
Origin: East Africa, Madagascar, South and Southeast Asia to Australia and Pacific
Eleotris melanosoma, the Black-bodied Sleeper or Dark Sleeper, is a robust sleeper goby (Eleotridae) found across a broad range from East Africa and Madagascar through South and Southeast Asia to Australia and the Pacific islands. It inhabits slow-moving rivers, tidal creeks, mangrove swamps, and estuaries where it lurks among submerged roots, rocks, and muddy substrate, ambushing fish and invertebrates with its wide gape. The body is uniformly dark brown to near-black with a subtle mottled pattern and a large, broad head. Like other Eleotris species, it is an opportunistic ambush predator capable of consuming prey items nearly as large as its own head. In the aquarium it is hardy and adaptable, tolerating a wide range of salinity and water chemistry. It is best maintained in a large tank with ample hiding areas and a diet of substantial meaty foods. Not suitable for any community tank containing fish small enough to be swallowed.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–25, KH 4–15; fresh to brackish (SG 1.000–1.015); tolerant of wide parameter ranges. Tank: 200 L minimum; large caves, mangrove root tangles, or overhangs; sandy or muddy substrate; subdued lighting. Feeding: Carnivore; feeder fish and shrimp, prawns, mussels, earthworms; can be trained to large meaty sinking pellets. Breeding: Benthic spawner in the wild; male guards eggs; rarely bred in captivity under aquarium conditions. Compatibility: Predatory; species-only or with fish too large to be swallowed; will consume shrimp, small fish, and invertebrates.
