Poecilia reticulata var.
Also known as: Elephant Ear Yellow Guppy, Dumbo Ear Yellow Guppy
Origin: Captive bred
The Elephant Ear (also known as Dumbo Ear) Yellow Guppy is one of the most theatrical fancy guppy strains, characterised by greatly enlarged pectoral fins that resemble elephant ears. In the yellow variant these fans are a warm golden-yellow, complementing the body colouration.
Because of the oversized pectorals, this strain is best kept in low-flow tanks with gentle filtration. Strong currents can tire the fish or damage the delicate fin structures. Dense planting helps the fish feel secure and show off their finnage.
Elephant Ear strains require slightly more care than standard fancy guppies, as the enlarged fins are prone to minor bacterial or fungal infection if water quality lapses.
Water: 24–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–18; pristine water quality is essential for fin health. Tank: 60 L minimum; gentle sponge filtration; avoid powerheads or strong flow. Feeding: High-quality flake, Artemia, micro-worms; varied diet prevents nutritional deficiencies. Breeding: Livebearer; fin size is heritable; use quality Dumbo females for strain breeding. Compatibility: Peaceful; avoid any fin-nipping tank mates; best in a species-only or gentle community.
