Gnathonemus petersii
Origin: West and Central Africa (Niger, Congo river systems)
The Elephantnose Fish is a fascinating weakly electric fish from West and Central Africa, instantly recognizable by its long, trunk-like chin extension used to probe substrate for food. It uses its self-generated electric field to navigate and communicate in murky waters and possesses one of the largest brain-to-body ratios of any fish. Due to their sensitivity and specialized needs, best kept by experienced hobbyists in a quiet, dimly lit aquarium.
Dim lighting essential — bright light causes stress. Provide soft substrate for snout probing and caves for daytime refuge. Feed live and frozen worms and small invertebrates — picky feeder requiring live or frozen meaty foods. Keep singly or in large tanks to avoid electric field interference. Sensitive to water quality and medication.
