Cobitis elongatoides
Also known as: Elongate Spiny Loach, Danube Spiny Loach
Origin: Central Europe (Danube basin)
Cobitis elongatoides is a widespread Central European spiny loach distributed across the Danube, Dniester, and adjacent drainages. It closely resembles Cobitis taenia but is generally more slender and somewhat larger, reaching up to 14 cm. The patterning consists of alternating dark and light blotches along a clear lateral band, with the flanks displaying a warm golden hue in well-conditioned specimens.
In the aquarium this species requires very similar treatment to C. taenia: cool water, deep fine substrate for burrowing, and excellent water quality. It is a facultative air-breather capable of supplementing gill respiration by swallowing atmospheric air, which it may be observed doing at the surface. This adaptation makes it somewhat tolerant of low dissolved oxygen but is not an excuse for poor filtration.
Feeding consists of sinking micro foods, and the species will also pick biofilm and microinvertebrates from the substrate. A cool, well-filtered tank with a Central European biotope theme — including crucian carp, bitterlings, or minnows — showcases this elegant loach at its best.
Water: pH 6.5–8.0, temperature 10–22°C, well-oxygenated, gentle to moderate flow. Tank: 80 L minimum; deep fine sand (5 cm+), minimal clutter, cool conditions. Feeding: Micro sinking pellets, frozen daphnia, cyclops, finely chopped bloodworm. Breeding: Seasonal spawner; cool winter period required to trigger spring spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful with all coolwater European community fish.
