Hemichromis elongatus
Also known as: Elongated Jewel Cichlid, Five-spot Jewel Cichlid
Origin: West/Central Africa
Hemichromis elongatus is the largest and most predatory of the commonly kept jewel cichlids, with a notably slim body and a large mouth capable of consuming surprisingly large prey. Despite its aggression, it displays beautiful jewel-like iridescence. It should be housed with fish too large to be eaten and plenty of space to establish territories.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, adaptable to moderate hardness. Tank: Minimum 200L; robust rockwork and driftwood; avoid small delicate fish or invertebrates. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, large earthworms, prawns, and meaty frozen foods; avoid feeder fish. Behaviour: Very aggressive open spawner; will target any fish that enters its territory during breeding. Compatibility: Only with large, similarly robust fish; not a community tank fish.
