Pseudotropheus elongatus
Also known as: Elongatus Mbuna, Elongate Mbuna
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Pseudotropheus elongatus is a distinctively shaped mbuna with a more elongated body than most species in the genus, giving it excellent speed and manoeuvrability. Males are deep blue-black with contrasting pale horizontal stripes. It is one of the more aggressive mbuna and will dominate tank mates in insufficient space. The elongated body plan makes it an interesting visual contrast in a mbuna aquarium.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.5-8.5, hard alkaline. Tank: 200L minimum; rock-heavy aquascape with many broken lines of sight. Feeding: Algae and vegetable-based foods; spirulina important; minimal protein. Behaviour: Aggressive; males will pursue and injure rivals and females — keep 1 male to 3+ females. Compatibility: Larger, robust mbuna community; not recommended with peacocks.
