About

The Emerald Eye Rasbora (Rasbora dorsiocellata) is a graceful, medium-sized rasbora from the lowland streams and rivers of peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra, Indonesia. The species epithet 'dorsiocellata' refers to the distinctive black ocellus (eye spot) at the base of the dorsal fin, a key identifying feature alongside its namesake bright emerald-green iris.

Reaching 6–7 cm in length, this species is larger than most nano rasboras, fitting comfortably in community aquariums without the fragility associated with micro fish. The body is slender and streamlined with a silver-bronze sheen that can take on golden hues under warm lighting. Males tend to be more slender and display slightly more intense coloration during spawning condition.

In the wild, Emerald Eye Rasboras inhabit slow to moderately flowing forest streams, peat swamps, and jungle rivers with soft, acidic, tannin-stained water. They are typically found in loose, mid-water schools among aquatic vegetation and submerged roots, feeding opportunistically on small invertebrates and organic particles.

In the aquarium, they are undemanding, peaceful, and long-lived — a reliable choice for both beginning and experienced aquarists. Their active schooling behavior and subtle but attractive coloration make them excellent companions for planted community tanks.

Care Guide

Emerald Eye Rasboras prefer soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water: pH 5.5–7.5, hardness 1–12 dGH, and temperatures 22–27°C. They are adaptable and tolerate a range of conditions, though soft, slightly acidic water brings out the best coloration.

A minimum 80-liter aquarium is suitable for a group of 8–10 fish. Provide a dark substrate, driftwood, and dense plantings of fine-leaved plants to create a natural environment. Floating plants to diffuse surface light are appreciated. Gentle to moderate filtration maintains water quality without excessive current.

Feed a varied diet of quality flake food, micro pellets, and small live or frozen foods including daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. They are enthusiastic feeders and readily accept most standard aquarium foods.

Emerald Eye Rasboras are peaceful and compatible with virtually all community fish of similar size and temperament: tetras, corydoras, gouramis, small cichlids, livebearers, and peaceful loaches. Avoid aggressive or much larger fish that may bully or consume them.

Keep in groups of at least 8–10 for natural schooling behavior. Weekly water changes of 25–30% maintain water quality and encourage active spawning behavior in well-conditioned adults.
