Nematobrycon palmeri
Also known as: Emperor Tetra
Origin: Colombia (San Juan and Atrato rivers)
Nematobrycon palmeri, the Emperor Tetra, comes from Colombia's San Juan and Atrato rivers. Males develop distinctive elongated central tail filaments and display vivid iridescent blue-green flanks with a bold dark lateral stripe. The species is more adaptable than many soft-water tetras, tolerating a broad pH range while remaining strikingly beautiful. A regal centrepiece for planted community aquariums.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 5.0–7.8, soft to moderately hard; very adaptable. Tank: 60 L minimum; planted aquarium with open swimming lanes; moderate current. Feeding: Accepts quality flake, pellets, frozen brine shrimp and bloodworm readily. Behaviour: Peaceful schooling species; keep 6+; males may spar elegantly without causing injury. Compatibility: Excellent with most small peaceful community fish; avoid very small nano species.
