Polypterus endlicheri
Origin: West and Central Africa (widespread in large river systems)
The Endlicheri Bichir is one of the largest bichir species, capable of reaching over 75cm in the wild, though aquarium specimens typically stay somewhat smaller. Its heavy body is covered in ganoid scales with intricate dark mottled patterns, and its large, upturned mouth is well-suited to engulfing prey. Only experienced fishkeepers with very large aquariums should attempt to keep this impressive but demanding species.
Requires a very large aquarium (600L+) with a tight-fitting lid — bichirs escape through the smallest gaps. Feed large meaty foods: whole fish, prawns, large earthworms. Keep only with fish too large to consume. Provide large cave structures. Can breathe atmospheric air — ensure surface access. Very long-lived — commit to 20+ years of care.
