Enterochromis paropius
Also known as: Scale-Scraper Victorian Cichlid, Paropius Victorian
Origin: Lake Victoria, East Africa
Enterochromis paropius is a lepidophagous (scale-eating) Victorian haplochromine with a distinctive stout, deep-bodied form and jaws specialised for striking at and removing scales from other fish. In the wild, it approaches prey fish from behind and below, using a rapid strike to dislodge and consume scales. This predatory strategy makes it an extraordinary ecological specialist and a fascinating, if demanding, aquarium subject.
In the aquarium, E. paropius should not be kept with fish significantly smaller than itself or with species that tolerate scale loss poorly. Adult males develop attractive blue-green iridescence overlaying a silver base, particularly visible on the face and flanks. The species requires ample space and should be considered for advanced aquarists only.
Diet in captivity must include sufficient protein-rich foods to meet the needs of an obligate carnivore. High-quality cichlid pellets and frozen invertebrates form a practical substitute for the natural scale-eating diet.
Water: 22-27°C, pH 7.0-8.5, hard alkaline; strict water quality management. Tank: 200L+; robust tankmates only; avoid pairing with any small or scale-sensitive fish. Feeding: Quality protein-rich cichlid pellets, frozen mysis and krill; frequent small meals. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; best bred in a dedicated species tank. Compatibility: Advanced Victorian-only; avoid all species susceptible to scale predation.
