Hyphessobrycon epicharis
Also known as: Epicharis Tetra
Origin: Venezuela (upper Orinoco tributaries)
Hyphessobrycon epicharis is a seldom-seen species from the upper Orinoco tributaries of Venezuela. It displays a deep, saturated red body with black-edged fins and a faint lateral stripe, creating a rich, jewel-like appearance. This species requires slightly warmer temperatures and softer, more acidic water than many of its relatives, reflecting the warm blackwater conditions of its native habitat. It thrives in aquariums with tannin-stained water, dark substrate, and abundant plant cover. A peaceful fish that schools well, it is best kept by hobbyists with some experience maintaining blackwater species. Compatible with other peaceful Orinoco endemics.
Water: Soft, acidic; pH 5.5–6.8, temperature 25–29 °C. Use RO or softened water; add tannins via driftwood or leaf litter. Tank: 60 L minimum; dark substrate, dense planting, floating plants for diffused lighting. Gentle filtration. Feeding: Omnivore; micro-pellets, quality flake, frozen cyclops, daphnia, and small bloodworm. Breeding: Difficult in captivity; very soft acidic water required. Condition with live foods and raise temperature slightly. Compatibility: Peaceful; keep with other small Orinoco species. Avoid boisterous or hard-water fish.
