Danio erythromicron
Also known as: Emerald Dwarf Danio, Erythromicron Danio
Origin: Myanmar (Inle Lake basin)
Danio erythromicron, the Emerald Dwarf Danio, is one of the most jewel-like members of its genus and is endemic to Lake Inle and associated waters in the Shan State of Myanmar. Males are stunning, displaying 10–15 turquoise-blue vertical bars on a body that glows orange-red or copper when in breeding condition. Females are more subdued but still attractive. The species inhabits shallow, clear, alkaline-to-neutral water with abundant vegetation, which is atypical for a danio. In the aquarium it prefers slightly harder, neutral water and does best in heavily planted tanks with a dark substrate where its colours intensify. A dedicated nano tank or species tank of 30 L upward is ideal. Compatible with other very small, peaceful fish such as Microdevario and small Boraras.
Water: Temperature 20–24 °C, pH 7.0–7.8, GH 8–15; Lake Inle's alkaline conditions preferred. Tank: 30 L minimum; densely planted species tank; dark substrate; gentle filtration. Feeding: Micro-pellet, nano flake, and small frozen foods such as cyclops and baby brine shrimp. Breeding: Spawns in vegetation; pairs form temporarily; fry require infusoria or commercial fry food initially. Compatibility: Very small and peaceful; best with Microdevario, nano rasboras, or kept as a species-only group.
