Potamon fluviatile
Also known as: European Freshwater Crab, Mediterranean Freshwater Crab
Origin: Mediterranean Europe
Potamon fluviatile, the European Freshwater Crab, is the only fully freshwater crab native to continental Europe, distributed across Mediterranean river systems in Italy, Greece, Turkey, and surrounding regions. It inhabits the banks of fast-flowing streams and rivers, living in burrows dug into soft riverbank substrate where it hides during the heat of the day.
This is a genuinely fully freshwater species — unlike most ornamental crabs, it does not require brackish water — and it is also distinctly temperate, requiring cool water temperatures well below tropical levels. In the aquarium it needs access to both shallow water and a land section with deep, burrowing-suitable substrate. It is an active and bold crab that can be kept visible during early morning and evening feeding periods.
Potamon fluviatile is legally protected in several European countries. Keepers must verify national regulations before acquiring this species, and captive-bred specimens from reputable breeders should be preferred to wild-caught individuals.
Water: 15–24°C, pH 7.0–8.5, GH 8–20, KH 4–15; cool freshwater; no brackish required. Tank: minimum 80 L paludarium, deep sandy soil for burrowing on land section, rocky substrate in water. Feeding: omnivore — sinking pellets, vegetables, frozen shrimp, invertebrate protein. Breeding: direct-developing — egg-carrying female; juveniles hatch as miniature crabs. Compatibility: territorial and aggressive — keep alone or as M/F pair; check local protection status.
