Corydoras evelynae
Also known as: Evelyn's Cory, Saddle-tail Cory
Origin: Brazil, Colombia (Rio Içá / Putumayo)
Corydoras evelynae is distinguished by a prominent dark saddle or blotch that straddles the caudal peduncle and extends onto the upper body near the tail. The rest of the body is pale cream to silver, adorned with scattered small spots and a subtle iridescent shimmer. It is native to the Rio Içá (Putumayo) drainage on the Brazilian-Colombian border.
This species is only occasionally available in the trade, typically appearing through importers who work directly with Brazilian or Colombian exporters. Its care requirements are generally straightforward for an experienced fishkeeper: slightly warm, soft, well-oxygenated water; a fine substrate; and a well-established, stable aquarium.
C. evelynae is a social species that schools tightly when in a group of six or more. It is a peaceful, methodical bottom-feeder that will never harm tankmates, plants, or décor. Feed a diverse diet including sinking pellets, frozen Mysis, bloodworm, and the occasional vegetable supplement to keep it in optimal condition.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 5.8–7.0, temperature 23–27°C; stable parameters important for imported fish. Tank: 80 L minimum with sand substrate, driftwood, and plant cover; avoid very bright open setups. Feeding: Sinking micro-wafers, frozen bloodworm, Mysis shrimp, and blanched greens. Breeding: Not commonly bred; conditioning with high-protein live foods and a temperature drop may encourage spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful with all community fish; well suited to Amazonian biotope aquaria.
