Exochochromis anagenys
Also known as: Undershot Hap, Anagenys Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi
Exochochromis anagenys is one of the rarest and most infrequently exported large predatory haplochromines from Lake Malawi. Its most distinctive feature is a prominently protruding lower jaw that gives the fish a distinctive undershot appearance — an adaptation for grasping and holding agile prey fish. Adult males develop a striking steel-blue coloration that deepens to near-navy in dominant individuals.
This species inhabits open water and rocky transition zones throughout the lake, hunting actively in mid-water. Due to its rarity in the trade, published aquarium care data is limited, but the species appears to follow general large predatory Hap requirements: very large tank, pristine water, meaty diet. Males are aggressive toward rivals and must be kept as the sole representative of the species.
A true collector's fish, available only occasionally from specialist importers. Maternal mouthbrooder. An impressive and unusual conversation piece for the serious Malawi specialist with appropriate facilities.

Feeding: Large carnivore pellets, silversides, whole krill; feed every 1–2 days. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; rarely bred in captivity; specialist knowledge needed.
