Nemateleotris exquisita
Origin: Indian Ocean, Maldives to Cocos-Keeling Islands
Nemateleotris exquisita is among the most coveted of all nano reef fish, featuring an extraordinary tricolor body that transitions seamlessly from creamy white at the head through vibrant orange to a deep, rich purple-red toward the tail — a coloration so vivid it appears almost artificial in a well-lit reef aquarium. Its elongated first dorsal spine bobs rhythmically as it hovers in moderate current, adding graceful movement to any reef composition. In the wild it is found in current-swept outcroppings and rubble zones in the Indian Ocean and Maldives. Best kept as a mated pair, and a sandy substrate area for burrow construction should be provided. Like all firefish, it is prone to jumping and requires a tightly fitted aquarium lid.
Provide a minimum 75-liter aquarium with fine sandy areas for burrow formation and live rock crevices for retreat. Best kept as a bonded pair — lone specimens may become stressed. Feed twice daily with small frozen foods such as mysis, cyclopeeze, or copepods. A secure lid is essential as firefish are strong and sudden jumpers. Moderate current suits this species well. Generally peaceful with all reef inhabitants.
