Hemichromis exsul
Also known as: Exsul Jewel Cichlid
Origin: East/Central Africa (Lake Turkana)
Hemichromis exsul is found in Lake Turkana and associated drainages in East Africa, making it unusual among the predominantly West/Central African Hemichromis genus. It displays typical jewel cichlid colouration and aggressive breeding behaviour, with tolerance for moderately hard and alkaline water compared to its relatives.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.5–8.0, medium hardness tolerated. Tank: Minimum 100L; caves, rocks, and sturdy décor suitable for a cichlid setup. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, earthworms, and crustaceans. Behaviour: Open or cave spawner; both parents defend spawning territory aggressively. Compatibility: Best kept as a species pair; avoid mixing with smaller or timid fish.
