Pelvicachromis subocellatus
Also known as: Eyespot Kribensis, Subocellatus Krib
Origin: West Africa (Gabon, Republic of Congo)
Pelvicachromis subocellatus is native to coastal rivers of Gabon and the Republic of Congo, preferring soft, slightly acidic water. Both sexes display a characteristic eye-spot near the tail, and females show a bright reddish-pink belly during breeding condition. A more retiring species than P. pulcher, it benefits from dense planting and multiple cave options.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft water preferred (GH 2–8). Tank: Minimum 60L; heavily planted with multiple caves and leaf litter for security. Feeding: Micro pellets, frozen cyclops, brine shrimp nauplii, and fine live foods. Behaviour: Shy and secretive; pairs can be territorial during spawning but generally peaceful. Compatibility: Best with small, peaceful species; avoid boisterous or large tankmates.
