Acanthurus dussumieri
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The Eyestripe Surgeonfish (Acanthurus dussumieri) is a large and imposing tang distinguished by its soft bluish-gray body covered in fine horizontal blue lines, a bright yellow stripe running from the eye across the top of the head, and boldly contrasting blue and yellow markings on the caudal peduncle surrounding its scalpel-like spines. Its sturdy, robust body and active behavior make it a commanding presence in large reef and FOWLR systems. It is a dedicated herbivore that constantly grazes on algae from rock surfaces. Hardy and adaptable once established, it is a suitable species for intermediate to advanced marine aquarists with sufficiently large systems.
Requires a minimum 600-liter aquarium with strong water circulation and ample live rock for grazing. Provide daily feedings of dried nori and seaweed sheets supplemented with frozen spirulina, mysis, and marine pellets. Can be territorial with other tangs, especially similar body shapes; introduce multiple tangs simultaneously if desired. Susceptible to ich if stressed — maintain excellent water quality and quarantine all new fish before introduction. Reef-safe with corals.
