Flowerhorn hybrid (Cichlasomatinae)
Also known as: Faders, Invisible Flowerhorn, Faders Flowerhorn
Origin: Captive bred (hybrid)
Faders, sometimes called Invisible Flowerhorns, are a uniquely interesting variant in which juveniles display normal Flowerhorn colouration — typically dark with some patterning — but then undergo a progressive fading of all dark pigmentation as they mature. During this fading phase the fish may appear pale, blotchy, or even temporarily unattractive, causing uninformed keepers to be alarmed.
Once the fading process is complete, the fish reveals its true adult colouration, which may be an intense yellow, vivid red, or deep orange with minimal or no black markings. This transformation typically completes between 3–8 months of age, and the anticipation of the final colour is part of the excitement of keeping Faders.
The genetic mechanism behind the fading trait is linked to the same genes responsible for colour pattern development in cichlids, and breeders selectively propagate this trait across Zhen Zhu, Kamfa, and other Flowerhorn lines. Care requirements are identical to standard Flowerhorns.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0; stable warm temperatures accelerate and smooth the fading process. Tank: Minimum 350L for adults; keep alone; monitor closely during the fading phase as stress can stall colour development. Feeding: High-quality Flowerhorn pellets with colour enhancers; diet during the fading phase influences the final colour outcome. Breeding: Fading is a heritable trait; pairing two proven Faders lines produces reliable fading offspring. Compatibility: Solitary; aggressive as all Flowerhorns regardless of current colour phase.
