Tetraodon fahaka
Also known as: Fahaka Puffer, Nile Fahaka Puffer, Globe Fish
Origin: Africa (Nile, Niger, Volta, Chad basins)
Tetraodon fahaka is one of the most widespread large African freshwater puffers, ranging across the Nile, Niger, Volta, and Chad river basins. Adults develop horizontal cream-and-brown banding with a prominently displayed beak capable of crushing thick mollusc shells. Their high intelligence, individual personalities, and aggressive nature make them impressive but demanding long-term pets.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard; high filtration and regular large water changes. Tank: Minimum 400 L for adult; open sandy substrate, minimal decor to prevent injury. Feeding: Large snails, whole mussels, clams, crabs, and cockles; feed 3–4 times weekly. Behaviour: Extremely territorial and aggressive; will bite through glass dividers and attack the keeper's hand. Compatibility: Strict solo housing; absolutely no tankmates — will kill fish of any size.
