Cirrhitichthys falco
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The Falco Hawkfish (Cirrhitichthys falco), also known as the Dwarf Hawkfish, is one of the smallest and most popular hawkfish species available to marine aquarists, making it suitable for medium-sized aquariums where the larger Longnose or Arc-Eye Hawkfish would be too big. Its attractive white body with red-orange spots and checkered patterning is bold and eye-catching, and its characteristic habit of perching prominently on rock outcroppings with front fins extended gives it a distinctly personable, inquisitive character. A hardy and adaptable species that settles well in reef and FOWLR systems, it is an excellent choice for hobbyists new to keeping hawkfish.
Provide an aquarium of at least 100 liters with multiple elevated perching spots — elevated rocks, coral branches, or other structures where the fish can survey its territory. Feed twice daily with frozen mysis, chopped marine shrimp, or other meaty foods. Note that Falco Hawkfish may prey on small ornamental shrimp and very small fish; use caution when combining with nano shrimp species or extremely small fish. Generally compatible with larger reef fish. A secure lid is advisable.
