Aspidontus taeniatus
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The False Cleanerfish (Aspidontus taeniatus) is one of the most remarkable examples of Batesian mimicry in the ocean. It has evolved to closely replicate the coloration, markings, and even the distinctive undulating swimming motion of the true Cleaner Wrasse (Labroides dimidiatus) with astonishing accuracy — right down to the blue and black horizontal stripe. Using this deception, it approaches fish expecting to have parasites cleaned, then ambushes them with a bite that removes scales and mucus. While scientifically fascinating as a behavioral study subject, it is an advanced-only aquarium species that requires very careful consideration of tank mates to prevent injury to other fish. Not suitable for peaceful community reef setups.
Suitable only for advanced aquarists who understand and accept its parasitic feeding behavior. House with large, robust fish that are not easily deceived or that can defend themselves. Avoid keeping with small, passive, or slow-moving fish that could be repeatedly bitten. Provide adequate live rock and hiding areas. Feed with meaty frozen foods. A fascinating species for dedicated species tanks or carefully planned FOWLR systems.
