Pao hypselogaster
Also known as: False Congo Puffer
Origin: Southeast Asia
Pao hypselogaster is a medium-sized freshwater puffer from Southeast Asian river systems, sometimes confused with African Tetraodon species due to superficial resemblance. Its mottled brown and olive patterning blends seamlessly with sandy and muddy riverbeds. It is rarely imported but prized by puffer specialists for its interesting body shape and active foraging behaviour.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard; stable parameters and low nitrates. Tank: Minimum 150 L; sandy substrate with driftwood and plant clusters for cover. Feeding: Snails, cockles, mussels, clams, and large frozen invertebrates. Behaviour: Territorial and aggressive; will harass and bite any tankmates introduced. Compatibility: Species-only; solo housing is the only safe option.
