Corydoras trilineatus
Also known as: False Julii Cory, Three-line Corydoras, Leopard Cory
Origin: Peruvian Amazon basin and upper Amazon tributaries
The False Julii Cory (Corydoras trilineatus) is one of the most commonly traded corydoras species in the aquarium hobby, frequently (and incorrectly) sold as Corydoras julii — a similar but rarer Brazilian species. C. trilineatus is native to the Peruvian Amazon basin, particularly the upper Amazon and its tributaries, where it inhabits sandy-bottomed, slow-moving rivers and streams with abundant leaf litter.
Distinguishing features include a complex pattern of fine black spots and reticulations across a silver-white body, three horizontal black stripes along the flanks (the characteristic giving rise to the species name 'trilineatus'), and the typical armored plating of callichthyid catfish. Males are slightly smaller and more slender; females are noticeably plumper, especially when gravid.
In the wild, False Julii Corys form large shoals that forage constantly along the substrate for food. They are non-aggressive and contribute positively to aquarium ecosystems by consuming uneaten food and stirring the top layer of substrate.
Like all corydoras, C. trilineatus breathes atmospheric air by gulping from the surface — a normal behavior that should not be confused with signs of oxygen deficiency unless occurring with increased frequency. They are also known to release mild toxic secretions when stressed, a defense mechanism shared across the Corydoras genus.
False Julii Corys require soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water: pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 2–15 dGH, and temperatures 22–26°C. They tolerate a range of conditions but are sensitive to poor water quality — ammonia, nitrite, and high nitrate levels can cause barbel deterioration and susceptibility to bacterial infections.
A minimum 80-liter aquarium is recommended for a group of 6. Fine sand substrate is highly recommended, as their sensitive barbels are damaged by rough gravel. Decorate with smooth driftwood, rounded stones, dense plants, and ample hiding spots. They appreciate dim lighting and shaded areas.
Feed a variety of sinking foods: catfish pellets, algae wafers, and sinking tablets as staples, supplemented with frozen or live bloodworms, tubifex, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Feed in the evening when corydoras are most active. Ensure food reaches the bottom past more competitive mid-water feeders.
False Julii Corys are peaceful with all community fish. Ideal companions include small tetras, rasboras, livebearers, peaceful cichlids, and other corydoras species. Keep in groups of at least 6, as solitary or paired individuals become stressed and less active.
Weekly water changes of 25–30% maintain the water quality this species needs. Avoid housing with aggressive fish that may nip their fins or outcompete them for food.
