Paracheirodon simulans
Also known as: False Neon Tetra, Green Neon Tetra
Origin: South America (Venezuela, Colombia)
The False Neon Tetra is one of the most strikingly beautiful of all small tetras, displaying a brilliant turquoise-blue lateral stripe that runs nearly the full length of its body with only a modest red patch near the tail. At just 2.5 cm, it is smaller than the true neon tetra and requires more exacting water conditions to thrive and show its best color. Native to the slow-moving, tannin-stained blackwater streams of Venezuela and Colombia, this species is accustomed to extremely soft, acidic water with low conductivity. In aquaria, it performs best in a biotope-style setup with dark substrate, driftwood, dried leaves, and dim lighting filtered through floating plants. The blue stripe fluoresces remarkably under soft lighting, making a school of twenty or more a breathtaking display. False Neon Tetras are peaceful community fish that do well with other small, non-aggressive species. They can be shy and are easily outcompeted for food by larger tankmates. Feeding them a variety of fine foods including micro-pellets, crushed flakes, and live or frozen baby brine shrimp and micro-worms will keep them healthy and vibrant.
Tank Setup A minimum of 40 liters is recommended, though larger tanks allow for bigger schools and more stable water chemistry. Use dark substrate such as black sand or fine gravel, and add driftwood and dried botanicals like catappa leaves to naturally acidify and tint the water. Dense planting with fine-leaved plants such as hornwort or Java moss provides security and mimics the natural environment.
Water Parameters This species demands soft, acidic water. Maintain pH between 4.5 and 6.5, general hardness of 0–5 dGH, and carbonate hardness kept very low. Temperature should be held at 24–28°C. Use reverse osmosis or very soft tap water, and consider peat filtration or botanicals to achieve the correct chemistry. High water quality is essential — perform regular small water changes.
Feeding False Neon Tetras accept most small prepared foods. Offer crushed flake, micro-pellets, and supplement with live or frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and micro-worms. Feed small amounts two to three times daily, removing any uneaten food promptly.
Tankmates Keep with similarly sized, peaceful species that tolerate soft acidic water: other small tetras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids like Apistogramma, and small corydoras. Avoid large or boisterous fish that may bully or outcompete them.
Health and Maintenance Sensitive to poor water quality and sudden parameter shifts. Maintain stable conditions and monitor for ich and velvet, to which this species can be prone. Regular water changes of 20–25% weekly are advised.
