About

Etheostoma flabellare is one of the most broadly distributed darters in eastern North America, found in clear, gravelly, and rocky streams from the Great Lakes drainage south to the Ozarks and Appalachians. Its common name refers to the expanded, fan-shaped caudal fin displayed by both sexes, and breeding males develop distinctive fleshy knobs on the tips of the dorsal fin rays. Its cryptic brown and tan banding provides excellent camouflage on rocky stream beds.

In the aquarium, Fantail Darters are hardy and adaptable compared to many of their relatives, tolerating a wider temperature range and less precise water chemistry requirements. They are best maintained in a stream biotope setup with a gravel and pebble substrate, flat stones for perching, and a moderate current provided by a powerhead or spray bar.

They feed primarily on small aquatic invertebrates — live and frozen bloodworms, Daphnia, and blackworms are all accepted eagerly. Despite being classified as benthic bottom-dwellers, they are active and interesting to observe as they hop between rocks and compete for prime territory.

Care Guide

Water: 12–22 °C, pH 6.5–8.0, moderate hardness; well-oxygenated with current. Tank: 60 L minimum; gravel and pebble substrate, multiple flat stones for territory establishment. Feeding: Live/frozen bloodworms, Daphnia, blackworms, and small invertebrates; rarely accepts dry food. Breeding: Female deposits eggs on underside of flat stones; male guards — provide multiple spawning surfaces. Compatibility: Peaceful with other small stream fish; multiple males require ample territory.
