Chaetodon fasciatus
Origin: Red Sea
Chaetodon fasciatus, the Diagonal Butterflyfish or Fahaka Butterflyfish, is a Red Sea endemic and one of the most boldly patterned butterflyfish available, featuring broad diagonal dark brown-black stripes sweeping across a white-to-yellow body, framed by a vivid orange tail and bright yellow dorsal fin. Its restricted natural range makes it less commonly available than Indo-Pacific butterflies, lending it an exclusivity that appeals to reef collectors. Moderately adaptable compared to obligate coral polyp feeders, it can be successfully maintained in FOWLR systems on a varied captive diet of mysis, marine pellets, and prepared butterflyfish foods. A beautiful and personable addition to suitably spacious marine aquariums.
Provide at least 200 liters with open swimming space and live rock. Transition to captive foods by initially offering live or frozen mysis and brine shrimp, then gradually introducing marine pellets and prepared butterflyfish formulas. Generally not safe for reef systems with stony corals. Best kept singly or as a bonded pair. Maintain pristine water quality — butterflyfish are sensitive to deteriorating conditions. A personable, bold species that quickly recognizes its keeper.
