Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Aulonocranus dewindti is a medium-sized mouthbrooding cichlid from the open sandy zones of Lake Tanganyika, where males develop extended dorsal fin rays and engage in elaborate lekking displays above the substrate. A maternal mouthbrooder, females incubate eggs for three to four weeks. Best observed in groups in a spacious sandy aquarium.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water. Tank: 200L+; fine sand floor; minimal decor; wide open spawning areas. Feeding: Spirulina-based flake with occasional Mysis or cyclops; varied omnivore diet. Behaviour: Males display in a lek; dominant males intensely colourful; generally peaceful toward other species. Compatibility: Xenotilapia species, Cyprichromis leptosoma, Callochromis macrops.
