About

Synodontis eupterus is one of the most visually stunning members of the large Synodontis genus, immediately recognizable by its extraordinarily tall, filamentous dorsal fin with feathery, elongated rays that give the fish a dramatic, sail-like profile. The body is creamy tan to light brown, heavily patterned with dark brown to black irregular spots and markings that fade somewhat with age.

Native to the Niger River system in West Africa and the White Nile in East Africa, this species inhabits a variety of environments including rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. It is a nocturnal bottom-dweller by nature but becomes more active during daylight hours once acclimatized to aquarium life, especially if caves and hiding spots are provided.

Reaching up to 30 cm, the Featherfin Catfish requires a large aquarium and is not suitable for typical community tanks. It is peaceful with fish it cannot swallow but is a powerful fish that can rearrange decorations and uproot plants. Its impressive size, striking pattern, and magnificent finnage make it a true showpiece species for the dedicated large-tank enthusiast. Like all Synodontis, it is long-lived, potentially surviving 15 years or more. In large aquariums, the Featherfin Catfish becomes increasingly confident and will often be visible during daylight hours resting on broad flat surfaces or patrolling the lower water column. Juveniles are more secretive. Given their potential 15-year lifespan, investing time in understanding this species and providing excellent long-term care returns dividends in the form of a fish with considerable personality and presence.

Care Guide

Tank Setup Requires a minimum 200-liter aquarium, with larger tanks greatly preferred. Provide large caves, hollow logs, and overturned clay pots for hiding. Use a sturdy substrate — fine sand or smooth gravel. Robust or artificial plants are recommended as it may uproot live plants. Strong filtration is essential to handle its bioload.

Water Parameters Maintain pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–26°C. Soft to hard water is acceptable. Perform 30% weekly water changes consistently. Good oxygenation and strong filtration are important for a fish of this size.

Feeding Omnivorous and hearty. Feed large sinking catfish pellets, carnivore sticks, and wafers. Supplement with prawns, mussels, earthworms, and chopped vegetables like zucchini. Feed a varied diet to maintain health and coloration. Feed primarily in the evening.

Compatibility Peaceful toward fish it cannot consume whole. Suitable tankmates include large cichlids (non-aggressive), large barbs, large tetras, and other robust community fish. Do not keep with small fish or invertebrates. Can be territorial with other Synodontis in small tanks.

Dorsal Fin Care The feathery dorsal rays can become damaged by fin-nipping tankmates. Choose companions carefully. Minor damage heals in clean water.

Long-Term Commitment With a lifespan exceeding 15 years, this fish is a serious long-term commitment. Ensure you can accommodate its eventual size and ongoing needs before purchasing.

Health Notes Generally robust. Sensitive to poor water quality in the long run. Monitor for ich, bacterial infections, and fin damage. Avoid copper-based medications.

Socialization and Long-term Care Single Featherfin Catfish kept in suitably large aquariums are rewarding long-term companions. The species develops individual personality over time and may become bold enough to feed from the keeper's hand. Its dramatic dorsal fin becomes fully developed only in adult fish — juvenile specimens give little indication of the spectacular fin that will develop over 12–18 months. As this species ages it becomes increasingly confident and may become a centerpiece attraction in large, well-decorated aquariums. Provide consistent, quality care and this fish will reward you for well over a decade.
