Danio feegradei
Also known as: Feegradei Danio
Origin: Myanmar
Danio feegradei is a seldom-imported species from the rivers of southern Myanmar, where it inhabits moderately clear, flowing waters over sandy and rocky substrates. It is a slender, streamlined fish with a vivid orange lateral stripe that contrasts attractively against its silver-blue flanks — a colour scheme that earns it occasional comparison to the Pearl Danio, though feegradei is slightly more colourful.
In the aquarium it displays all the hallmark traits of the genus: fast, active swimming, strong schooling instinct, and an eagerness to feed on almost anything offered. It is equally at home in a planted community tank or a species-only setup. Water quality should be maintained carefully as newly imported specimens can be sensitive until they settle in.
For hobbyists looking to explore beyond the most commonly kept danio species, Danio feegradei offers an attractive and lively alternative that is straightforward to maintain once established.
Water: Temperature 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard; good filtration and weekly water changes recommended. Tank: Minimum 60 L with ample open swimming space; gentle to moderate current; planted sides and background with clear midwater. Feeding: Micro-pellets, flake, and small frozen foods; newly imported specimens may initially prefer live daphnia or brine shrimp to stimulate feeding. Breeding: Egg-scatterer over fine plants; breeding behaviour similar to other small danios; condition with varied live and frozen foods. Compatibility: Peaceful with all similarly sized community fish; excellent tankmate for small rasboras, nano tetras, and peaceful bottom dwellers.
