Betta splendens
Also known as: Female Crowntail Betta, CT Female, Female Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
Female crowntails express the same genetic fin-ray extension as male crowntails but with typically shorter fins, making the spiky appearance more understated. Their colouration ranges from drab to surprisingly vivid depending on the line, and they are generally hardier than their long-finned male counterparts.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — routine maintenance keeps fins healthy. Tank: minimum 20L; sorority tanks need 80L+ with ample territory and line-of-sight breaks. Feeding: carnivore — betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia; twice daily. Behaviour: females may squabble over hierarchy; introduce simultaneously with other females. Compatibility: peaceful community tanks; one of the easier female bettas to integrate.
