Also known as: Fenestratus Hap, Protomelas Fenestratus
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Protomelas fenestratus is a moderately sized haplochromine from Lake Malawi found along rocky shores and transition zones. Males develop blue-green iridescence with a distinctive pattern of darker spots along the flanks. It is less commonly offered than some haps but is an excellent, hardy aquarium fish that colours up well under good conditions.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.5-8.5, hard alkaline water. Tank: 250L minimum with rock structures and sandy floor. Feeding: Balanced cichlid diet including pellets and frozen meaty foods. Behaviour: Moderate aggression; typical hap disposition, more active during breeding. Compatibility: Good with other Malawi haps of similar size; compatible with peaceful mbuna.
