Sturisoma festivum
Also known as: Festival Whiptail Catfish, Banded Sturisoma
Origin: South America (Venezuela — Orinoco basin)
Sturisoma festivum is native to the Orinoco River basin and its major tributaries in Venezuela, inhabiting fast to moderately flowing clearwater rivers where it grazes algae and biofilm from submerged rocks, driftwood, and hard substrate. It is one of the largest regularly available Sturisoma species and commands attention in any aquarium large enough to house it comfortably.
The species displays striking transverse banding along its flanks, and breeding males develop elongated caudal and dorsal fin filaments that can add several centimetres to their apparent length. These fin extensions are a reliable indicator of a fully mature, well-conditioned male and are often used by hobbyists as a gauge of overall health and welfare.
Sturisoma festivum has been bred in captivity and is an attentive parent. Conditioning pairs with a varied diet of vegetable matter, frozen foods, and live daphnia can trigger spawning. Eggs are laid in batches of 50–150 on smooth vertical or horizontal surfaces and are guarded exclusively by the male.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderate (GH 3–12); strong oxygenation and water movement recommended. Tank: 200 L minimum; large smooth driftwood and flat stones; open swimming areas. Feeding: Algae wafers, spirulina, zucchini, cucumber, occasional frozen daphnia for conditioning. Breeding: Male guards large egg batches; fin filaments indicate prime condition; fry straightforward to raise. Compatibility: Excellent for large South American community; peaceful with cichlids and large tetras.
