Mesonauta festivus
Also known as: Festivum Cichlid, Flag Cichlid, Festivum
Origin: Amazon and Orinoco River basins, South America
The Festivum Cichlid (Mesonauta festivus) is native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins of South America, where it inhabits slow-moving, heavily vegetated backwaters, flooded forest margins, and calm stretches of larger rivers. It is closely related to and often confused with Mesonauta insignis, the Flag Cichlid, which shares a very similar appearance and care profile.
The most distinctive feature of M. festivus is the broad, oblique black stripe that runs diagonally from the lower lip, through the eye, and up to the tip of the dorsal fin. The body is silver-gold with a slight greenish iridescence, and the fins may show dark edging. This pattern provides excellent camouflage among vegetation and submerged branches in its natural habitat.
In the aquarium, Festivum Cichlids are among the more peaceful medium-sized cichlids. They are active swimmers that occupy the middle water column and appreciate plenty of swimming space along with areas of dense planting for refuge. Unlike many cichlids, they rarely dig or rearrange the substrate significantly, making them compatible with planted aquarium setups.
Festivum Cichlids are best kept in pairs or small groups in a spacious aquarium. They may be kept with a wide range of community fish including large tetras, peaceful barbs, angelfish, and other non-aggressive cichlids. They become more territorial during breeding but are unlikely to cause serious harm to tankmates.
Tank Setup Provide a minimum 150-liter aquarium with plenty of open swimming space and areas of dense planting. Use a fine gravel or sandy substrate. Driftwood, tall plants such as Amazon swords and Vallisneria, and floating vegetation help create a natural environment. The tank should be well-filtered with a gentle to moderate water flow to replicate calm Amazonian conditions.
Water Parameters Maintain temperature 24–30°C, pH 5.5–7.5. Festivum Cichlids prefer soft to moderately soft water but adapt reasonably well to moderate hardness. GH 2–12 and KH 1–6 are suitable ranges. Perform 25% weekly water changes. Good biological filtration is important as these are medium-sized fish with moderate waste output.
Feeding Omnivorous and unfussy feeders. Accept high-quality cichlid pellets or granules as a staple, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and occasional blanched spinach or spirulina-based foods. Feed twice daily in small portions. Avoid overfeeding, which degrades water quality.
Tankmates One of the better cichlid choices for community aquariums. Compatible with large peaceful tetras, angelfish, Discus (with appropriate water temperatures), peaceful barbs, and other non-aggressive cichlids. Avoid housing with very small fish that may be viewed as prey, or with highly aggressive species. In large tanks, Festivums coexist well with other medium cichlids.
Breeding Festivum Cichlids are open spawners, depositing eggs on broad plant leaves or flat surfaces. Both parents guard the eggs and fry. During this period, they become more territorial. Fry can be raised on baby brine shrimp and powdered food. Removing tankmates to a separate tank during breeding reduces stress on the parents.
