About

The Festivum Cichlid (Mesonauta festivus) is a graceful, tall-bodied cichlid native to the Amazon, Paraguay, and Orinoco river systems across Bolivia, Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. It inhabits slow-moving, heavily vegetated waters including flooded forests, river margins, and lagoons with dense aquatic plant growth.

Its most distinctive marking is a broad diagonal black stripe running from the corner of the mouth diagonally upward to the tip of the dorsal fin — a pattern unique among South American cichlids. The body is silver-grey with subtle iridescence, and the fins may show orange or yellow tinting, particularly in breeding condition.

Reaching 15–20 cm in the aquarium, Festivum Cichlids are moderately sized but tend to be less destructive and aggressive than many cichlid relatives. They form monogamous pairs for breeding and are substrate spawners, depositing eggs on flat stones or broad plant leaves. Both parents participate in brood care.

Festivum Cichlids are noted for their compatibility with other peaceful South American species. They can be kept with larger tetras, catfish, and other medium-sized cichlids, though care should be taken during breeding periods when territorial behavior intensifies.

In terms of care, they are undemanding and adaptable, making them a rewarding choice for aquarists seeking a larger, more characterful community cichlid without the destructive behavior of more aggressive species.

Care Guide

Festivum Cichlids thrive in soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water: pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 3–15 dGH, and temperatures 23–28°C. They tolerate a range of conditions but show best coloration in soft, slightly acidic water with ample cover.

A minimum 200-liter aquarium is recommended for a pair, with larger tanks preferred for community setups. Provide dense plantings of robust aquatic plants (Amazon swords, Vallisneria, large Anubias), driftwood, and flat stones as spawning surfaces. They generally respect plants but may uproot them during territory establishment.

Feed a varied diet of quality cichlid pellets, flake food, and supplemental live or frozen foods: earthworms, bloodworms, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp. They accept most standard cichlid foods readily.

Festivum Cichlids are peaceful toward dissimilar fish but may be mildly territorial with other cichlids, especially when breeding. Suitable community companions include silver dollars, large tetras, corydoras, Geophagus species, and other medium-sized peaceful cichlids.

During spawning, they become more defensive of their territory. Provide sufficient tank size and visual barriers to reduce aggression. Regular water changes of 25–30% weekly maintain water quality and encourage breeding behavior.
