Uca sp.
Also known as: Fiddler Crab, Calling Crab
Origin: Worldwide (tropical coasts)
Uca species are small, semi-terrestrial crabs found in brackish mudflats and mangroves worldwide. Males carry one dramatically oversized claw used for attracting females and deterring rivals, while females have two symmetrical small claws. They require brackish water, a sandy beach area, and regular tidal simulation or dry land access to thrive.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.5–8.5, brackish (SG 1.005–1.015) with a beach area above the waterline. Tank: Minimum 60L paludarium with sandy substrate sloping to a shallow water zone; mangrove roots ideal. Feeding: Algae, detritus, sinking pellets, and small protein-based foods; feeds from the substrate surface. Behaviour: Active during the day; males display with oversized claw; burrowing behaviour natural and expected. Compatibility: Can be kept in same-species groups; not suitable with fish or freshwater inverts.
