Tetraodon biocellatus
Also known as: Figure-8 Puffer, Figure Eight Puffer
Origin: Southeast Asia (coastal rivers)
Tetraodon biocellatus is widely distributed in the coastal rivers and estuaries of Southeast Asia and is arguably the most beginner-friendly puffer species in the hobby. Its bold figure-8 dorsal pattern, vivid yellow underside, and green dorsal surface make it immediately recognisable. It is hardy, curious, and interactive while being manageable in size — but it must be kept in brackish water for long-term health.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, SG 1.005–1.010; brackish conditions are essential — freshwater causes chronic stress. Tank: Minimum 80 L; hardy decor, some plant cover (Java fern), and open sandy areas. Feeding: Ramshorn snails (daily), mussels, frozen bloodworm, and brine shrimp. Behaviour: Inquisitive and personable; less aggressive than most puffers but will nip fins — watch carefully with tankmates. Compatibility: Best species-only; can be cautiously housed with fast brackish fish such as mollies or archer fish in large tanks.
