Dawkinsia filamentosa
Also known as: Filament Barb, Blackspot Barb
Origin: South Asia (India, Sri Lanka)
Dawkinsia filamentosa inhabits fast-flowing rivers and hill streams in peninsular India and Sri Lanka. Adult males are distinguished by the elongated, thread-like extensions of the dorsal fin rays — a feature that gives the species its common name. The body is silvery with a subtle pinkish hue and dark lateral markings. They are active, robust schoolers that require plenty of swimming space and good water movement.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 6–15); benefits from well-oxygenated water. Tank: 150 L minimum; good filtration and moderate current to replicate stream habitat. Feeding: Omnivore; flake, pellets, algae-based foods, frozen bloodworm, and brine shrimp. Behaviour: Peaceful active schooler; keep in groups of 6+; males spar gently to display fins. Compatibility: Good with other medium-large peaceful cyprinids; avoid small or fragile species.
