Stonogobiops nematodes
Origin: Western Pacific
The Filament-fin Shrimpgoby (Stonogobiops nematodes) is one of the most sought-after gobies in the reef hobby, combining extraordinary beauty with one of nature's most fascinating behavioral interactions. Males develop a dramatically elongated first dorsal fin filament that gives the fish a distinctive, elegant silhouette. Its white and vivid orange-red banding pattern is striking, and pairs of this species form an obligate mutualistic symbiosis with pistol shrimp (Alpheid shrimp), sharing a burrow dug and maintained by the nearly blind shrimp in exchange for the goby's vigilant lookout role — a behavior that is endlessly entertaining to observe in a well-set-up aquarium. Pair with an appropriate pistol shrimp (Alpheus bellulus or similar) for the most rewarding display.
Provide a minimum 80-liter aquarium with a sandy substrate area at least 5 cm deep for burrowing, and supply a suitable Alpheid snapping shrimp companion if desired. Feed twice daily with small frozen foods: mysis, copepods, and marine flake. A secure, tight-fitting lid is essential as shrimpgobies will jump from small openings. Peaceful with all suitably sized reef fish but may be intimidated by large, aggressive tank mates.
