Mastacembelus erythrotaenia
Origin: Southeast Asia
Mastacembelus erythrotaenia — the fire eel — is one of the most beautiful freshwater spiny eels. The dark grey-brown body is marked with vivid red horizontal stripes and red dorsal/pectoral spots that intensify with age. Despite reaching 90+ cm it is generally peaceful toward fish too large to swallow. It requires fine sand for burrowing, excellent water quality, and meaty foods. Slow to accept prepared foods — train with live bloodworm.
pH 6.5–8.0. Fine sand (burrowing). 300+ L. Feed: bloodworm, earthworm, whole shrimp. Shy — provide caves and dim lighting. Jumper — secure lid required.
