Neocaridina davidi var.
Also known as: Fire Red Shrimp, Fire Red Neocaridina
Origin: Captive bred (originally East Asia)
The Fire Red Shrimp is a high-grade red Neocaridina davidi line sitting above standard Cherry Shrimp but below Painted Fire Red in the colour grading hierarchy. Fire Red specimens display dense, opaque red colouration extending across the entire body including legs and swimmerets, with minimal transparency remaining.
The name reflects the intensity of the red — a vivid, saturated fire-engine red rather than the semi-transparent cherry-red of lower grades. In a planted tank with dark substrate, Fire Red Shrimp create a bold, eye-catching focal point. Like all Neocaridina, they are hardy, adaptable, and breed prolifically in stable conditions.
Fire Red Shrimp represent excellent value for aquarists seeking impressive red shrimp without the premium pricing of the highest-grade Painted Fire Reds, while still offering noticeably superior colouration to standard Cherry Shrimp.
Water: 18–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 6–15, KH 2–8; most dechlorinated tap water suitable. Tank: minimum 20 L; dark substrate enhances red colouration; moss and fine plants recommended. Feeding: algae wafers, spirulina foods, blanched vegetables, quality shrimp pellets. Breeding: easy; females carry 20–30 eggs; fry self-sufficient in mature established tank. Compatibility: peaceful; excellent with nano fish and other Neocaridina; shrimp-safe tank only.
