Lysmata debelius
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The Fire Shrimp (Lysmata debelius), also known as the Blood Red Fire Shrimp or Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp, is widely considered the most visually spectacular ornamental shrimp in the marine aquarium hobby. Its vivid scarlet-red body, contrasted by bright white antennae and delicate white-spotted legs, creates an arresting visual impact in any reef system. Unlike the more outgoing Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp (Lysmata amboinensis), it tends to be more reclusive and will typically settle into cave structures or overhangs during the day, becoming more active and visible as the tank lights dim. Like all Lysmata species, it is a simultaneous hermaphrodite, and bonded pairs will mate regularly in captivity, producing small, planktonic larvae. Reef-safe with corals.
Provide live rock caves, overhangs, and shaded areas where the shrimp can shelter. Will become bolder and more visible after settling in. Feed with meaty foods including frozen mysis or targeted feeding with shrimp pellets. Pairs can be kept together — they will molt in synchrony and mate readily. Avoid copper-based medications or sudden salinity changes. Keep with peaceful, non-predatory fish only.
