About

The Fireback Cichlid is one of Lake Victoria's most colourful surviving haplochromines, with males developing a spectacular contrast between their red-orange dorsal region and electric-blue belly and throat. Many Victorian cichlids are critically endangered due to Nile Perch introduction, making captive populations in aquaria of conservation significance.

Care Guide

Water: 23-26°C, pH 7.5-8.5, moderately hard alkaline water; regular water changes to maintain quality. Tank: Minimum 150L; rocky shoreline simulation with open sandy areas for display. Feeding: Omnivore diet of quality cichlid pellets, spirulina, and frozen invertebrate foods. Behaviour: Males territorial and aggressive toward rivals; maintain 1 male to 3+ females. Compatibility: Victorian cichlid community; mix carefully with similar-sized species of compatible temperament.
