Nemateleotris magnifica
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The Firefish Goby (Nemateleotris magnifica) is one of the most iconic, widely recognized, and beloved small marine fish in the reef hobby. Its creamy-white to bright yellow anterior body transitions dramatically into vivid orange-red posteriorly, culminating in an intensely colored tail — a coloration so eye-catching that it immediately draws attention in any aquarium. Its elongated first dorsal spine bobs rhythmically as it hovers in gentle water current, feeding on passing zooplankton. In the wild and in captivity, it is highly prone to darting into a burrow or crevice at the slightest disturbance, making a sandy burrow site and live rock retreats essential. Hardy, peaceful, and relatively straightforward to care for, it is a flagship nano reef species for beginners.
Provide a minimum 60-liter aquarium with fine sandy substrate areas for burrow construction and live rock crevices for shelter. Best kept as a bonded pair — lone firefish may become withdrawn and stressed over time. Feed twice daily with small frozen mysis, cyclopeeze, and marine flake. A tight-fitting lid is absolutely essential as firefish are fast, powerful jumpers. Peaceful and reef-safe with all corals and most invertebrates.
