About

The Five Banded Barb is a handsome and modestly sized barb from the blackwater peat swamps and streams of Borneo, closely related to the more familiar Tiger Barb but significantly more peaceful in temperament. As the name suggests, five bold dark vertical bars cross the warm amber-orange body, creating a crisp, eye-catching striped pattern. The fins carry hints of orange and red, and males develop more intense body coloration than females. At 5 cm, this species is well-suited to medium-sized community aquariums without the need for very large tanks. Native to acidic blackwater environments with very soft water, low mineral content, and high tannin levels, the Five Banded Barb shows its best colors in setups that replicate these conditions: dark substrate, tannin-stained water, floating plants, and dim lighting. While more tolerant than some obligate blackwater species, it should not be kept long-term in hard or highly alkaline water. It is entirely peaceful and can be safely housed with other small, non-aggressive species including some long-finned fish, which distinguishes it clearly from the Tiger Barb. A school of six or more is recommended for optimal behavior.

Care Guide

Tank Setup A 60-liter blackwater-style aquarium with dark substrate, driftwood, catappa leaves, and dense fine-leaved plants is recommended. Floating plants diffuse lighting and create a natural shaded canopy. Gentle to moderate filtration is appropriate — this species does not require strong current.

Water Parameters pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 22–27°C, general hardness 1–10 dGH. Soft, acidic conditions are preferred. Peat filtration and botanical additions help maintain the appropriate chemistry. Avoid hard, alkaline water.

Feeding An omnivore that accepts quality flakes, small pellets, and frozen or live foods. Supplement with daphnia, brine shrimp, and blanched vegetables. Feed twice daily in small portions.

Tankmates Peaceful with virtually all community species of appropriate size. Unlike the Tiger Barb, the Five Banded Barb is safe with long-finned fish. Good companions include small tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and small loaches with matching water chemistry requirements.

Schooling Keep a minimum of six. Groups of eight to ten show the best social behavior.

Health and Maintenance Hardy within its preferred parameter range. Perform regular water changes of 20–25% weekly. Monitor for signs of stress if water chemistry drifts toward hard or alkaline values.
