Thysochromis ansorgii
Also known as: Five-spot Cichlid, Ansorge's Cichlid
Origin: West Africa (Nigeria, Benin)
Thysochromis ansorgii is a monotypic genus from coastal rivers of Nigeria and Benin, related to Chromidotilapia. It is a largely peaceful cichlid that tolerates a wide range of conditions and is a good option for beginner cichlid keepers seeking something beyond the common krib. It shows open substrate or cave-spawning behaviour depending on the pair.
Water: 23–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness. Tank: Minimum 80L; includes caves, plants, and open sandy areas for foraging. Feeding: Quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and plant-based foods. Behaviour: Generally peaceful; pairs spawn and guard eggs but are less aggressive than jewel cichlids. Compatibility: Good community cichlid with tetras, killifish, and other similarly sized peaceful fish.
