Laetacara dorsigera
Also known as: Flag Acara, Red-breast Dwarf Cichlid, Buckelkopf-Buntbarsch
Origin: Pantanal, Paraguay River basin, and lower Amazon tributaries — Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina

The Flag Acara (Laetacara dorsigera) is a small cichlid from South America's Pantanal region, Paraguay River basin, and lower Amazon tributaries in Bolivia, Brazil, and Argentina. Closely related to the Flag Cichlid (Laetacara curviceps), it can be distinguished by its more rounded head profile, slightly stockier build, and the more intense red-orange breast coloration that develops in both sexes — particularly striking during breeding.
Reaching only 7–9 cm in length, Flag Acaras fall squarely into the 'dwarf cichlid' category despite not being classified in the Apistogramma or Microgeophagus genera. Males are slightly larger and develop more intense coloration; females remain colorful but are slightly smaller and develop a more rounded belly when gravid.
In the wild, Flag Acaras inhabit densely vegetated, slow-moving rivers, oxbow lakes, and flooded margins with soft to moderately hard water and abundant cover. They are generally calm and non-destructive cichlids that rarely uprooting established plants, making them one of the more plant-safe cichlid species.
They are bi-parental substrate spawners that clean flat surfaces (broad plant leaves, flat stones) for egg deposition and actively guard their brood. The parental behavior is exemplary and entertaining to observe. Their relatively peaceful nature means they can coexist with a wider range of tankmates than larger cichlid species.
Flag Acaras prefer soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water: pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 2–15 dGH, and temperatures 22–27°C. They adapt to a range of conditions but breed most readily in soft, slightly acidic water.
A minimum 80-liter aquarium is suitable for a pair, with 120+ liters recommended for community setups. Provide dense plantings of broad-leaved plants (Amazon swords, Anubias, Echinodorus), flat stones for spawning, driftwood, and hiding spots. Fine sand or smooth gravel substrate allows natural foraging behavior.
Feed quality dwarf cichlid pellets, flake food, and regular supplements of live or frozen foods: small earthworms, bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and cyclops. Varied diet enhances coloration and breeding condition.
Flag Acaras are peaceful with dissimilar fish of appropriate size. Compatible tankmates include small to medium tetras, rasboras, corydoras, smaller armored catfish, peaceful loaches, and other non-aggressive cichlids. Avoid very aggressive fish or extremely small species that may be bullied during breeding.
During spawning, aggression toward other tank inhabitants increases temporarily. Ensure sufficient territory space and visual barriers. Regular water changes of 25–30% weekly maintain water quality and promote reproductive activity.
